On 3 October 2023, the FCA imposed a financial penalty of £11,164,400 on Equifax Limited. The reason for this action is that Equifax Limited failed to manage and monitor the security of UK consumer data it had outsourced to its parent company based in the US which experienced a data breach. The fine also relates to the firm’s failings in relation to treating customers fairly and communicating information in a way which is clear, fair and not misleading following a data breach security of UK consumer data it had outsourced to its parent company based in the US. The breach allowed hackers to access the personal data of millions of people and exposed UK consumers to the risk of financial crime.
